About Us

The West Beacy Bunch is a “geographic” community group in south West Beaconsfield, near Fremantle Western Australia. The group is “exclusively inclusive” - exclusive in that you can only join if you live in the defined Beacy Bunch area (see map), but inclusive in that we focus on making sure that everyone in that area is involved.

We are proud to say that 70% of residents in the area have joined our email list, and our monthly flyers are dropped in every letter box. People can identify our flyers because they are handwritten with a child’s drawing – that way they don’t get thrown out with the junk mail.

As a group we coordinate at least one activity every month – from plant swaps to outdoor movies, long table dinners to bonfires. Check the photos in our Things we get up to page for photos of our activites in the past. In 2025 we organised 39 activities with 20 people helping by hosting something.

We have a very relaxed organisational structure. There is at least one Street Coordinator in every street who organises the distribution of notes and makes sure that folk in their street know about events and feel welcome to come along. Events are organised by anyone who is passionate about organising something. We don’t have a formal committee– most of the organising is done at our yearly meeting and via a small Whatsapp group.

Covid and its lock downs were like a test to see how connected our community was and how well it responded to a crisis.

Just days after we heard about the coming lock downs a small group met, established a "hot line" and phone, put together a flyer and organised the distribution of the flyer to every household. Street Coordinators also checked in on people they thought might be vulnerable.

We did all this in 24 hours!

If you are inspired by our story and are interested in developing community in your local area, we highly recommend the Neighbourhood Village Project.

During the 10 weeks of this course you will work with others wanting the same sense of belonging where they live and great mentors from around the world. Both online and face-to-face courses are available. Learn more here.
